By January 2021, the package for the content of the care reform will be completed. This was announced today by Social Minister Rudolf Anschober. Currently, he said, they are in the midst of implementation, where the main goal will be to attract 100,000 additional employees to the nursing profession through appropriate incentives.
Anschober said staff is the most important area, citing two problem areas: First, of the current 127,000 employees, more than 30 percent are currently over 50 years old and will retire in the next ten years, he said. And secondly, Austrian society will be aging more and more by 2030. This means that “we need many, many new employees,” said Anschober.
Minister wants to make the profession more attractive
The attractiveness of the nursing profession should therefore be further increased by improving working conditions, through further training and qualification, and through health-promoting support in the event of stress. According to Anschober, almost all those working in the nursing profession would like to have more time to care for their elders. With stronger digitalization and debureaucratization of the care sector, he also wants to take action here, Anschober said.
The minister focused on retraining measures and additional qualifications for the unemployed, barrier-free access and entry for those interested, and attracting those who are already qualified but not working in care. Anschober cited the diversity of the range of services and the self-determination of those affected by freedom of choice between the different forms of care as further priorities in the reform.
Aschbacher focuses on training
According to Labor Minister Christine Aschbacher (ÖVP), 700 million euros will be invested in education and training. This year, about 10,000 employees in the care sector have been successfully re-employed or trained. In October alone, there were more than 2,000, Aschbacher said, stressing that it was important to invest in retraining for all those who are unemployed and interested in the nursing profession.
The minister announced 7,000 new additional places for nursing training: on the one hand, for training as home help and nursing assistance, and on the other hand, for training as a certified social care worker. Aschbacher also mentioned the education bonus of 180 euros per month in addition to unemployment benefits for the duration of the training. This is possible directly through AMS courses and AMS placement foundations in almost all provinces, he said. “There are still free places,” Aschbacher said.
